Under-cabinet lighting is the single best-bang-for-buck upgrade in any kitchen. It eliminates dark counters, makes the room feel custom, and costs less than $500 in many cases.

The four options, compared honestly

  • Plug-in LED tape — $40–$150 a run, genuinely DIY. The catch is the cord: you'll see it unless you drill a pass-through in the cabinet gable and land it near an existing outlet.
  • Hard-wired LED tape with a remote driver — $500–$1,200 installed with a wall dimmer. Cleanest result, no cords, one switch for the whole run. Cost depends almost entirely on how far the electrician has to fish wire.
  • Puck lights — cheap and easy, but they throw scalloped pools with dark gaps between. Use them deliberately: over a single prep zone, or inside glass-door uppers.
  • Battery motion pucks — fine inside a pantry or a blind corner. Not a kitchen lighting plan; the batteries always die during dinner.

Color temperature and CRI, where most people go wrong

Under-cabinet light sits eighteen inches from your food, so quality shows. Two numbers matter:

Kelvin. 2700K is warm and incandescent-like but reads dingy at midday against the hard south and west daylight we get here. 4000K is crisp but clinical, and only works with cool grays and a lot of stainless. 3000K is the safe default for white, greige, and painted cabinets. Anything above 4000K makes a kitchen look like a garage.

CRI. Insist on 90+. Under 80, raw chicken looks gray, wood tone goes flat, and the veining in quartz or quartzite you paid for turns muddy. Then match it to your ceiling cans — mismatched Kelvin between the two is the most obvious mistake in any kitchen photo.

Mount it at the front edge, not the back

Push the strip as far forward on the cabinet bottom as it will go, tucked behind the light rail. Light then washes down the backsplash and across the counter. Mounted at the back, it glares straight into your eyes off a glossy backsplash or polished quartz.

If your backsplash is glossy tile or a slab, spend the extra $8–$15 per foot on an aluminum channel with a frosted lens. It diffuses the individual diodes into one continuous line; without it you'll count reflected dots for the next ten years.

Decide this before you order cabinets, not after

Under-cabinet lighting is a cabinetry decision as much as an electrical one. Three things have to be specified at order time: a light rail or bottom molding deep enough (¾" is plenty) to hide the strip, a notch or grommet in each gable for wire pass-through, and a home for the driver plus a switch location. Add all three to your free 3D design and they're free; add them after the boxes are hung and someone is drilling your new cabinets.

One local note: LED drivers hate heat. Don't let anyone bury one in an unconditioned attic or directly above the range hood — that's how a three-year part fails in eighteen months. And match the dimmer to the driver (ELV or TRIAC as specified); a mismatch is the buzz-and-flicker complaint we hear most.
